Also if you are done with the configuration of your system to restart with a USB drive, then you can leave out the preparation part. If you have not done all these things then here is the list of preparation you should do before installing new Windows 10 using USB.

Create a backup

When you install Windows 10, it removes all the existing data from your hard drive. This makes it essential to make a backup for your data before starting the installation, so your important data remains safe.

System Backup

You need to create a short term backup for your system’s currently installed files too. If something goes wrong you will have backup for that too. Most suggested way to backup your files is “System Image Backup tool”.

Other ways you can use are:

Creating Backup in One Drive

By using One Drive for backing up your files, you can just upload all your data to one drive. You can use any other cloud service too.

If you use OneDrive, you can also use the backup settings page to sync your profile folders, including Documents, Pictures, and Desktop, to the cloud automatically.

These are the steps to create a backup on One Drive:

  1. Go to settings
  2. Click  Update & Security
  3. Click Backup
  4. Click backup files option from ‘Backup files to One Drive’
  5. Now just click the start backup button

Using External Storage

If the amount of data you want to backup is really large, using the cloud can be expensive. In that case the best option would be external storage.

This is the way to backup your files in external storage:

  1. Go to file explorer
  2. In the address bar type the path
  3. From ‘home tab’ choose select all
  4. Now click the ‘copy to’ button
  5. Now Click the ‘choose location’ option
  6. Choose the destination folder
  7. Copy the file

Other preparations involve:

  • Check activation of Windows 10
  • Get a genuine key
  • Download important drivers
  • Check requirement of Windows 10
  • On firmware change the boot order

Let’s begin with the Windows Installation

Here is a step by step guide:

Enter BIOS of your system

First thing you need to do in order to start the process is set your computer to boot from USB. After inserting USB restart your computer. While restarting you will find a boot menu. You can get to that menu by using the key. When this message appears on the screen, use the key as soon as possible. In case you do not have a boot menu, you need to go into UEFI or BIOS. This will help you get onto the real grass root settings of your computer.

The keys mostly used are F10, F2 and Delete. In some new systems, there are special buttons to go into the startup menu of the system.

Set System to boot from USB

When you enter the set up after using the key, your next step is to find the section of boot. It’s time to change the boot to USB. Sometimes the USBs are given as  hard disks, so choose hard disk if that’s the case. After that go into the boot order of the chosen device and list your USB. Check if there is ‘save and restart’ or something which does the same operation. Now your system can boot into the set program of Windows 10. There will come the option of press a key to start booting from USB.

Select the WIndows clean install

Now you have gotten in the setup. You can select the language, currency, time and the metheo you want. After this click on the ‘install now button’. If the system asks, put your key. This will give you the licence to use the software. Last part of this step is to select the custom menu.

This is where the setup will ask you the licence key which you obtained in the preparation. There are multiple ways to get the key.

Choose the option of SSD or hard disk

Next screen of this installation process depends if you have an already installed operating system or you are installing it to a blank disk. On a blank disk the option will be “unallocated space”. You just have to select this option and click next to start the window installation.

When installing Windows to an old system, the options will be more diverse. You will be given the option to make partitions with the name of drives. You need to delete all the previously existing partitions. Now you can press next and install windows. The setup will inform you when the installation is done.
